Bookmarks for Kate Hartford
This is my Netscape bookmarks file for resources that might be of use to educators teaching about East Asia (except for China, which is a separate project right now!). The sections that follow present links to sites dealing with Asia and East Asia in general; Japan; Korea; Hong Kong; Taiwan; Singapore; and finally a collection of links to resources for educators (things that don't fit into the country/region categories or that just seemed to me to warrant a separate listing. Enjoy, and please provide feedback on what you liked, what you didn't like, and other things you'd like to see on this page. You can e-mail me at hartford@umbsky.cc.umb.edu.
Asia and East Asia in General
Basics
- The World Bank Group--World Development Indicators
- You can get at some, but not all, of the data tables from this World Bank publication. Each table lists all World Bank member countries and presents available current (and a little bit of historical) data on various indicators of development and progress in development.
Government and Politics
- Chiefs of State and Cabinet Members of Foreign Governments
- Luckily, this site is updated more often than the CIA's maps of Belgrade. Good place for quick reference if you need to know who's Prime Minister of Singapore -- or any other country -- quickly.

Japan
Basics
- Office of Japan Information
- This is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the information will reflect an American viewpoint.
- Background Notes: Japan 3/99
- From US State Department.
- CIA World Factbook: Japan
- Japan in Figures 1999
- This is a very useful set of pages provided by Japan's official statistical agency; select the topical area you are interested in, and you get to a page where you can view (mostly) tables and (some) graphs, or download the tables in Microsoft Excel format.
- Japan Country Fact Sheet
- Japan Information Network: Japan Atlas
- Japan Information Network
- This is the U.S. site for JIN, affiliated with Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There is a lot of useful information here -- maps, articles on a wide range of subjects, a grab bag of statistics organized in very accessible fashion, links to other sites of interest, etc.
- 3D Atlas Online: Japan
- Japan (Political Map) 1994
- JAPAN - A Country Study (English)
- Japan Information Center: Statistics
- Some of the statistics presented here (generally in both tabular and graph form) could provide a useful basis for classroom discussions. The "opinion survey" section is especially thought-provoking -- and punctures a number of stereotypes about the Japanese.

- Of course, given the time difference, it will only be online during our evenings and wee hours. But if you or your students can stay up for it, you could try clicking on one of the little newsreel camera icons and see what comes up on RealPlayer. Don't expect English on this site -- it's all Japanese, including the text on the page and, of course, the speeches in the Diet (Japan's Parliament).

- This is a site with a definite point of view, which is stated up front on the first page:
"Welcome to the home page of major Taiwanese organizations in the USA.
We work for human rights and democracy in Taiwan, and are dedicated to the future of our beautiful Taiwan ("Ilha Formosa") as a free, democratic and independent nation, which is accepted by the international community as a full and equal member. " In short, they won't be giving you the official views of the Taiwan government or the PRC. - Education About Asia
- A newsletter offered through the Association for Asian Studies; among other things, it offers "Extensive guides to resources for use in your classroom: films, books, videos, curriculum guides, CD-ROMs, websites, software, and other useful educational tools...." The material provided online tends to emphasize the literary and cultural side, but the magazine itself covers a broad range of fields. Japan
Organizations
- Japan Information & Culture Center
- National Clearinghouse for U.S.-Japan Studies
- International Society for Educational Information
- This is an organization connected with Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. One of its functions is to detect inappropriate information and images of Japan in foreign textbooks -- images it characterizes as "Fujiyama-Geisha" -- and to request corrections of the textbooks. The organization has gone on to much more proactive work, including providing some online resources educators can use, and sponsoring foreign educators' tours of Japan. A good site to get some of the Japanese perspective about foreigners' perspectives on Japan -- as well as Japanese authors' take on Japan itself.

- Japan Now
- Newsletter distributed by the Japan Information and Culture Center, now available online too (but in PDF format).
- Japan Insight
- This is a great site for educators! It offers a select set of issues, and for each one you can drill down to look at articles, or even "cases" (stories relating the situation/experience of individual Japanese) or explore some of the major themes that the issues relate to. The treatment of the different issues varies, so you won't get bored looking at the same old thing for each one.

Videos and Educational CDs
- Penn State Media & Technology Support Services
- Penn State will rent out some of their holdings. The search page is very well designed, letting you choose settings for type of media, dates, audience level, etc., and then search by keyword or combinations of keywords. Rental rates are quite inexpensive (around $10- $15 per title for videos) and the online descriptions help you figure out whether the video is likely to be of use, and tell you playing times and distributor.
- Asian Educational Media Service
- Great source for good quality media resources on Asia, well organized to make it easy for you to search for what you want. And with information handily provided about the distributors, including phone numbers, websites, etc.
- libraryvideo.com
- This site has a pretty large collection of educational videos, CDs, and DVDs, including some related to Asia. The perspectives of most of the videos are however strongly America-centric.
- Video Preview Room -- The Pacific Century
- JETRO videos
- These are aimed mostly at US businesses interested in getting into Japan or the Japanese market, but some might be of interest for classroom use. Provided free.

- Generate a map online, on the fly, for any of a fairly wide selection of economic and social data. The initial map has to be for the whole world, but there is an option that allows you to click on the map to zoom in on a particular geographic region. Handy if you want students to see a region in relation to the entire world, and then look more closely at individual countries within the region.
