Some Basic Sources:

CNNIC reports and other materials

  • "Survey Report on China's Internet Development," in English or in Chinese
  • "Quantity of China's Internet Information Resources," in English (undated, and only one so far) or in Chinese.
  • "Concerning Bandwidth Survey," in English (closing date: March 2002) or in Chinese. These have gone FLASH-y since the first report came out. Fun to play with, but not fun for putting together numbers.
  • China Internet Development Yearbook (only in Chinese: 2001 and 2002). See this for texts of speeches, regulations, policy documents and a lot more. Naturally there is a time lag here; the 2002 edition is based on 2001 information.
Compilations of Sources:
  • Sources on China's Internet, prepared by Kate Hartford for panel on China's Internet, Council on Foreign Relations (New York City, 25 June 2001). This is a fairly short, bare-bones list.
  • Information & Telecommunications in China on the Internet. Very useful site created by Alex Zixiang Tan, Assistant Professor of Information Studies at Syracuse University. The short descriptions of and links to further documentation on important developments are especially helpful.
  • The bookmarks in china-wiredmarks.htm. Fairly outdated links in Kate Hartford's bookmarks file. Most of the sources are in Chinese, and if your browser is not equipped to read Chinese characters, you will see some very odd characters indeed in most of the entries. Come back once in a while to see whether I've gotten around to updating and reorganizing these.
  • Contribute your own set of links and see your name here in lights.
If you need help getting equipped to read Chinese characters online, use the tools page.
