technology or telecom sectors? Or about the uses to which these technologies
are being put? China-wired.com will be gathering material on these topics,
and providing as well a little stash of research tools and hints. For the
time being, most of the content has been generated by the site owner and
webmistress, Kate Hartford.

2004 highlights:
-
China's Internet users total 87.0 million, including 31.1 million on broadband
(Jan. 2004: 79.5 million and 17.4 million, respectively). Given the survey's
margin of error, the actual total could be as low as 81.7 million or as
high as 92.3 million.

International bandwidth now totals 53.94G, of which ChinaNet accounts for
39.32G.
-
382,216 domain names are registered under the .CN top-level domain; there
are 626,600 web sites not counting those within EDU.CN.
-
The proportion of female users continues to fluctuate around the 40% mark,
with 40.7%, up just over one percentage point from the Jan. 2004 statistics
but approx. equal to the proportions in Jan. 2002 and Jan. 2003.

Average number of e-mail messages received by each user per week:
non-spam = 4.6; spam = 9.2.

39.0% of users have incomes under 500 yuan per month (including 11.3% with
no income at all), a significant increase over the 34.2% reported in Jan.
2004.

31.9% of users are students; 7.1% are teachers.
