NEW: JULY 2004 Internet Statistics: Chinese version of 14th annual China Network Information Report is now online at :
July 2004 highlights:
  • China's Internet users total 87.0 million, including 31.1 million on broadband (Jan. 2004: 79.5 million and 17.4 million, respectively). Given the survey's margin of error, the actual total could be as low as 81.7 million or as high as 92.3 million. 
  • International bandwidth now totals 53.94G, of which ChinaNet accounts for 39.32G.
  • 382,216 domain names are registered under the .CN top-level domain; there are 626,600 web sites not counting those within EDU.CN.
  • The proportion of female users continues to fluctuate around the 40% mark, with 40.7%, up just over one percentage point from the Jan. 2004 statistics but approx. equal to the proportions in Jan. 2002 and Jan. 2003.
  • Average number of e-mail messages  received by each user per week: non-spam = 4.6; spam = 9.2.
  • 39.0% of users have incomes under 500 yuan per month (including 11.3% with no income at all), a significant increase over the 34.2% reported in Jan. 2004.
  • 31.9% of users are students; 7.1% are teachers.
